Becoming an amputee changes your life in ways that are hard to explain unless you’ve lived it. One day you’re walking around without thinking about it, and the next day every step requires planning, patience, and determination. The physical recovery is one part of the process, but the mental and emotional side of it can be just as challenging. That’s exactly why I created Amputee Joe—to share the real experience of living life as a below-the-knee amputee and hopefully make the journey a little easier for someone else going through the same thing.

There’s a Lot of Medical Information — But Not Always Real-Life Information

When I first started this process, I realized something pretty quickly: there’s a lot of medical information out there, but not always a lot of real-life information. Doctors and prosthetists can explain how a prosthetic leg works, what the recovery timeline might look like, and what physical therapy involves. But what about the everyday things?

Simple questions start popping up everywhere. How long does it really take to get comfortable walking again? What does it feel like the first time you stand up on a prosthetic? What are the things nobody tells you about living with one?

That’s the kind of stuff I want to talk about here.

Real Experiences From Someone Living It

This blog isn’t meant to be a medical journal or a technical manual. Instead, it’s a real look at the process from someone living it every day. I’ll be sharing my own experiences—from getting my first prosthetic leg to learning how to adjust to daily life again.

There will be good days, frustrating days, and probably some funny moments too, because sometimes you just have to laugh at the situation you find yourself in. Life doesn’t stop after an amputation—it just changes, and learning how to navigate that change is part of the journey.

Helping Others Earlier in the Journey

Another big goal of Amputee Joe is to help people who might be earlier in the process than I am. If you’ve recently had an amputation, or you’re about to receive your first prosthetic leg, chances are you have a lot of questions. Some of them might feel small or even a little embarrassing to ask, but they’re completely normal.

Things like prosthetic fit, balance, skin care, walking confidence, and simply adjusting to a new normal are things every amputee eventually deals with. Over time, I’ll be sharing tips, lessons learned, and things I wish I had known earlier.

Building a Community Around the Journey

One of the most important things I’ve realized is that nobody should have to go through this alone. Whether you’re an amputee yourself, a family member, or someone supporting a loved one through the process, having access to real experiences and honest conversations can make a huge difference.

The goal of this blog is to build a place where amputees—and the people who support them—can find useful information, encouragement, and maybe even a little inspiration. There’s strength in hearing from people who understand what you’re going through.

Moving Forward One Step at a Time

If you’re reading this and you’re also an amputee, just know you’re not alone. A lot of us are figuring this out step by step. Some days will be harder than others, but progress does happen, even when it feels slow.

Sometimes the biggest victory of the day is just getting up and moving forward.

Welcome to Amputee Joe. This is the beginning of the journey, and I’m glad you’re here.
